Obituary - On January 22nd, a great seaman and esteemed resident of Beachy Cove, Bay Roberts, passed away in the person of Capt. Esau MERCER, the son of the late Charles Mercer, ship owner.  He was married twice, first to Miss
Lavinia French, who bore three children, two sons and one daughter; his second wife was Miss Fannie Snow, of Clarke's Beach, who survives. Ten children were the offspring of the marriage.  At the age of 87 years and 6 months, Capt. Esau, in the words of Tennyson, crossed the bar and entered port, universally regretted by his old friends. (Jan. 27th announcement has a different death date)

While on the way from Seal Cove, White Bay, to Wild Cove, Mrs. Wesley PARDY, and David WELLS, were caught in the blizzard that raged over the country on Monday last.  The woman perished from exposure, and the man managed to get ashore, after being  eight hours adrift on the ice.

Died at Spaniard's Bay, March 1st, Bridget, wife of Jas. PEDDLE (formerly Miss Bridget Delaney of this town), leaving a husband, four daughters and one son.

After a lingering illness, passed peacefully away at her home at Coley's Point, March 12th, Mary Jane, beloved wife of Horatio FRADSHAM, aged 70 years.  She leaves to mourn their sad loss a husband, two sons, Albert and Isaac, both residing at Corner Brook, one daughter, Mrs. Azariah Russell, Coley's Point, one sister, Mrs. Nathan Norman, Cupids, one brother, Isaac Churchill in Vancouver, B.C. and 15 grandchildren.

Wedding - At the home of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Ralph, 25 Watts Street, Chelsea, a very pretty wedding took place, Feb. 29th, the contracting parties were Mr. George A . HAMPTON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ebenezer Hampton of
Port de Grave, Nfld., and Miss Evelyn CAVE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Cave of Bay Roberts. Miss Alma Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Martin, played the wedding march.  The groom was supported by Mr. Hubert A. Ash, while Miss Florence Hampton, sister of the groom acted as bridesmaid.

Died, at Hr. Grace, Monday night, Catherine M. (Kitty Jordan), beloved wife of  M. T. JONES, leaving a husband and nine children to mourn their sad loss.

Brigus Briefs: Mr. and Mrs. Eric BURTON and child left for Hazel Hill, Nova Scotia, last week, to make their future home there.

Died, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.A. Oke, Hr. Grace, March 13th, Mrs. Annie E. PARSONS, aged 87 years.
Passed peacefully away at her home, Shearstown, March 9th, after a lingering illness, Carrie, beloved wife of John BRADBURY, aged 21 years.  She leaves to mourn their sad loss, a husband, one darling child, Edith, father and
mother, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Parsons of Coley's Point, also one brother, Charles Parsons.

Snatched from the jaws of death was the experience of a little boy between seven and eight years of age, son of Absalom MOSHER, of Humbermouth.  The child had gone to the well, and while dipping up water; he slipped head
foremost into it.  The rail coach passing, fireman Seabright saw the feet of the youngster sticking up out of the well, having been attracted by the movement of the feet in a fruitless effort of the lad to extricate himself. He told the driver, and immediately the coach was stopped, and the crew rushed to the scene and rescued the little fellow. - Western Star.

Capt. L STEVENSON, commanding the S.S. Caribou, on the Cabot Straits between Port aux Basques and North Sydney, passed away March 18th, at his residence North Sydney, after an illness of five weeks duration.

Passed peacefully away, March 16th, at Cambridge, Mass. U.S.A., Helen, beloved wife of John SWYERS, at the age of 46.  Deceased was born at Bonavista, Nfld., but went to the U.S. about 22 years ago, and there married, and has since resided.  She leaves to mourn a devoted husband, and two sons, Walter and Gordon, one daughter, Olive Gertrude, and a father, living in Bonavista. (Her mother predeceased her eight months ago.) Also, four sisters, Mrs. Estell, Medford, Mass., Mrs. Dr. Kazanjian, Boston, and Mrs. Kenneth M. Mercer, Bay Roberts, Mrs. M.H. Little, Bonavista, and one brother in Connecticut, U.S.A.

The sudden passing away of Mrs. Pearl HIGGINS, at Country Road, March 25th, was a very heavy blow to her husband and parents.  Mrs. Higgins, aged 23 years, leaves to mourn a husband, mother and father, one sister, Mrs. Thomas Batten, Bareneed, two brothers, William and Allan, at home.

Died suddenly, March 18th, at Clarke's Beach, Pastor Fred MORGAN, Bethesda Pentecostal Assembly.  Left to mourn are a widow, nee Flora Bowering, of Coley's Point, and mother, Mrs. J. Morgan.  Funeral took place March 20th to the Pentecostal Cemetery.

We regret to hear of the death of Mr. S. H. SMITH, father of Mr. S.A. Smith, of the Western Union Cable Staff here, which occurred at Weedon, Aylesburg, England, March 22nd, at the age of 78 years.

Died at Bay Roberts West, March 25th, Fannie SPARKES, widow of the late William Sparkes, aged 72 years. Left to mourn are two sons, Aubrey, of this town, and Richard in the United States, and one daughter, Mrs. James Mercer, of Grand Falls.  Funeral took place Tuesday to the S.A. cemetery.

Clara WATERMAN, a servant at the home of Mr. J.W. Hiscock, of St. John's, was burned fatally on Monday morning, in attempting to light the kitchen stove with kerosene oil.  She was taken to the General Hospital and died
there on Thursday night.

Passed peacefully away at her home, Coley's Point, April 9th,  after a lingering illness, Mary RUSSELL, widow of the late Francis Russell, aged 81 years.  Left to mourn their loss are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas French and Mrs. Thomas Purdy, both residing at Corner Brook, and 7 grandchildren. Funeral took place Wednesday afternoon to the C. of E. cemetery.

Rupert GRIMES, well known to many in Bay Roberts, who served as Staff Sergeant with the Nfld. Regiment, passed away at the General Hospital, Thursday, after a months' illness, at the early age of 35 years.  Last year deceased was married to Miss Mary CRON, of Hr. Grace, who survives him.  He leaves to mourn a father, ex-Supt. of Constabulary Grimes, wife, two brothers, George F., M.H.A., and Stanley in Montreal, and three sisters, Gladys, Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Andrews.

The death of Mr. M.H. VINICOMBE, ex-M.H.A., and a member of the Board of Liquor Control, took place with tragic suddenness, just about as he was to go to his home, Tuesday.  Mr. Vinicombe has not been feeling well for some time, but yet was able to attend to his duties. "Nix", as he was familiarly called, was well liked and respected. His remains being interred at Belvedare Cemetery.

Death of J. R. SHEPPARD, Spaniard's Bay, April 18th, he was a J.P. and general dealer. He was 72 years old, born at Harbor Grace. About 47 years ago he came to Spaniard's Bay.  He leaves to mourn their sad loss a wife, three sons and two daughters.

Died at French's Cove, April 14th, Robert, darling child of Robert and Jane DALE, aged 6 years.  Funeral took place April 17th to the U.C. cemetery.

Died at French's Cove, April 18th, Joseph, son of John C. and Clara FRENCH, aged 15 years. Funeral took place to the U.C. cemetery, today.

Died at Coley's Point, April 23rd, Wallace, darling child of Albert and Edith RUSSELL, aged 2 years and 2 months. Funeral took place April 25th to the U.C. cemetery.
A quiet, but very pretty wedding was solemnized at St. Mary's Church, St. John's, April 25th, when Mildred Winifred, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William PINSENT, of New Harbour, T.B., was joined in holy bonds of matrimony to Walter Joseph, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph MERCER, of this town.

Died at Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, May 14th, Robert, only son of Hon. Eli DAWE, M.L.C. and Mrs. Dawe.  Left to mourn are a widow, three children, father, mother and two sisters.

Died, May 23rd, Elizabeth, beloved wife of John CAVE, aged 28 years. Left to mourn their sad loss are a husband and infant son, father, Mr. John Dawe of Cupids and two step-brothers.  Funeral took place today to the S.A. cemetery.

Died at Coley's Point, May 30th, Abram GRAY, aged 78 years.  Left to mourn are one son, Mr. John Gray, with whom he resided, and three daughters, Mrs. Edward Snow of Bay Roberts, Mrs. James Mercer of Country Road, and Mrs. Eugene Vaters of St. Johns, nine grandchildren, one great grandchild. Funeral took place today to the C. of E. cemetery, Coley's Point.

Passed peacefully away at Shearstown, May 20th, after a long illness, Edward FRENCH, beloved husband of Leah French, aged 51 years and 7 months. Deceased was one of our prominent carpenters. Left to mourn are a widow,
five sons, Thomas and Joseph in White Plains, N.Y., U.S.A., Max, Edward and Donald at home, two daughters, Iva Myrtle and Lizzie Barbara, at home, one sister, Mrs. John Holmes (of Henry), at Shearstown and one grandchild.
Funeral took place May 22nd to the United Church cemetery.

After an illness lasting about eight months, seven of which he was receiving treatment at the General Hospital, at St. John's, John MERCER, son of Mr. John Mercer (of James), Mercer's Cove, passed peacefully away June 9th.
Deceased was 26 years of age. He leaves a father, one brother and two sisters, to mourn their sad loss.

Died, at St. John's, June 11th, Willis ANTLE, aged 72 years.  Surviving him are a widow, one son, two daughters, two brothers and three sisters.

Died at Hr. Grace, June 8th, George W. ANDREWS, beloved husband of Louise Andrews, aged 51 years.  Leaving a widow, three sons and three daughters to mourn their sad loss. The late Mr. Andrews was manager of Thompsons
Drugstore and also of the Anglo American Telegraph office.

Mr. Mark CHAPLIN, tailor, passed away suddenly at his home in St. John's Thursday morning, aged 72 years.

Once again the angel of death has cast a gloom over Shearstown, and has removed from our midst one of our popular young men, in the person of George Kempton HOLMES, beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Holmes, who passed peacefully away June 15th at the age of 24 years. Left to mourn their sad loss are a sorrowing father and mother, one brother, Thomas, also one sister, Rosie, and grandmother, Mrs. Naomi Turtle.  Funeral took place June
17th to the C. of E. cemetery.

Died at Coley's Point, June 21st, Eunice GREENLAND, widow of the late Isaac Greenland, aged 82 years. Left to mourn are two sons, Lemuel and Joseph, now in Boston, Mass. and one daughter, Mrs. Jesse Sparkes, French's Cove.
Funeral takes place Saturday to the C. of E. cemetery.

Two men, Bernard Lee and John MOORE, of the fishing schooner, Winnifred Lee, belonging to Grand Bank, were drowned on the Banks on the 14th instant, whilst hauling trawls.  Both men are married.

James FOX, aged 16 years, of William Street, St. John's, died at the General Hospital Sunday night last, as a result of injuries received a few hours before, when he was hit by a motorcar driven by Mr. R.A. PARSONS, B.L. While we sincerely regret with Mr. Parson's numerous friends, the accident, we are pleased to state, that no blame was attached to Mr. Parsons, the driver of the car, as the unfortunate lad ran from one side of the road to the other to be with his companion, who crossed the street just ahead of him.

On Tuesday, the marriage of Mr. E.L. OKE and Miss Jessie SHEPPARD, daughter of Inspector and Mrs. Sheppard, was solemnized at St. Paul's Church, Hr. Grace.

Mrs. Frederick WISEMAN (nee Susie Barnes) and three children, Harriet, Gordon and Allan, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Chas. Stevens, of Coley's Point, arrived home from New York via St. John's.  Mrs. Wiseman has been in
poor health for some years, and it is hoped the change of climate will improve her health.

A sad drowning accident was reported from Lark Hr. yesterday, when the wife of the light keeper at South Head, Curling, lost her life after a dory in which she and her husband were in, upset.

Paul KELLY, 16 year old son of Richard Kelly, of Holyrood, was fatally injured Sunday afternoon last, at Holyrood.  It appears that Kelly, in company with a companion, was trying to climb a steep hill, when grasped a dead branch, it broke, and the unfortunate boy fell a distance of 170 feet, to a rock pile.  A doctor and priest were immediately summoned, but despite their efforts, he passed away.

Mrs. Fred MERCER and little daughter, Dorothy, of Dorchester, Mass., arrived here by express, July 2nd.  Mrs. Mercer is visiting her parents Mr. & Mrs. Isaac Morgan, Coley's Point.

On Saturday last, while fishing on Gull Pond, one of the storage waters of Seal Cove River, William G. SMITH  and John PATTERSON, of St. John's, lost their lives.  Evidence of the tragedy was found on Sunday by Messrs. W.
Churchill and A. Tuff, of St. John's, who were on their way up the river. The late William Smith leaves a wife and nine children, he was a director of the firm of George M. Barr. The late John Patterson leaves a wife and one child. He was a veteran of the late war and since in the employ of Hawes & Co.

Died at the General Hospital, St. John's, July 5th, James Sinclair TAIT, M.D., aged 80 years.

Robert DAWE, of this town, was seriously injured and died about one and a half hours afterward, when an eastbound freight train collided with his motor car near Holyrood on Tuesday night last.  Mr. Dawe motored to St. John 's Tuesday morning last, taking with him Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Baggs and children, to take the S.S. Newfoundland enroute to Boston, Mass. On his return to Bay Roberts in the evening he was accompanied by Capt. Abe Parsons, who was sitting in the front seat with him when the accident occurred.  They left St. John's at 6:00 p.m., and proceeded on the trip about 10 minutes before they reached the level crossing at Joy's Point, Holyrood, they met the regular Carbonear train. It is supposed Mr. Dawe presumed that having passed this train, there was no more danger from trains. He came to the crossing at Joy's Point where there is a curve and slight grade, and found a freight train coming from the west.  He was near the track at the crossing; it was impossible to stop the car in such a short space.  He therefore did the only thing possible, increased the speed in a desperate effort to cross the tracks ahead of the train, but he did not succeed.  Capt. Parsons was hurled to a distance of 10 to 15 feet, and sustained minor injuries to his face and hands, while Robert Dawe was found in the car dead.  Deceased was the only son of the late Capt. Charles Dawe, and leaves to mourn their sad loss a wife (nee Miss Butt), three sons, Charles in Boston, Adrian in New York, and David at home, two daughters, Mrs. Watts in Hr. Grace, and Emma in New York, and one sister, Mrs. Walter Wills, now on her way to England.

Died at French's Cove, July 12th, Jane, beloved wife of John BADCOCK, at the age of 76 years.  Left to mourn are a husband, one son, Thomas, now at Straits of Belle Isle, and three daughters, Mrs. Reuben Snow, Coley's Point, Mrs. H.J. Ball, Lowell, Mass. and Mrs. James Ryans, Jamaica Plains, Mass. Also fourteen grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral takes place tomorrow, July 14th, to the U.C. cemetery. The funeral of the late Robert DAWE took place Tuesday afternoon to the C. of E. cemetery.

Mrs. William BELBIN and little daughter, Florence, arrived here Saturday last on a visit to her mother, Mrs. Robert Mercer.

Died at Coley's Point, July 16th, Susie, beloved wife of Frederick WISEMAN, and daughter of Mrs. Chas. S. Stevens, aged 26 years.  Left to mourn are a husband, three small children, Harriet, Gordon and Allan, also a mother, step-father, and two brothers, James and Harry Barnes, of Brooklyn, N.Y.
